A Squirt of Prevention Helps Protect Us All from the Flu

FLUMIST Delivery Schedule Begins

Pensacola, FL: It is FLUMIST time again in Escambia County Schools.  Parents should be on the look-out for permission slips tucked into backpacks and listening for a phone call from their child’s principal when their school’s FLUMIST date is a few weeks out. District Health officials are urging parents to strongly consider permitting their children to participate.

The FLUMIST vaccine is delivered with a squirt of preventative medicine into your child’s nose – no needles needed! This is the second year that the vaccine is being made available this way. The permission slip will ask a list of questions that parents should consider carefully because there are situations that would mean your child IS NOT a candidate for this type of vaccine, such as, is your child allergic to eggs, does your child have significant asthma, or does your child have other chronic health conditions.  If it is determined that a child should not get the mist version of the vaccine at school, parents will be referred to their family’s healthcare provider, or the local Health Department, to ask for the vaccine in a different form that would be safer for their child.

The FLUMIST Vaccine is available at no out of pocket cost to the students’ parents. Parents are asked to provide insurance information because the insurance companies will help cover the cost of the vaccine. If a family does not have health coverage, the student will still get the vaccine at no cost to the student.

“Last year the FLUMIST program was offered to the school district by Healthy Schools and over 5000 students were vaccinated against the flu using the FLUMIST product,” explained Martha Hanna, ECSD Health Services Coordinator. “It is hard for us to measure the effect this had, but we are confident that it helped save some students from getting the flu, or at least helped reduce the severity of their case. We hope to see even more families sign their children up to participate this year.”

“Getting the flu vaccine, either at school or through a visit to your family health provider is a great idea because it helps avoid the flu spreading through our classrooms and schools, and then into your home.” added Hanna. “The more parents who allow their children to participate the wider this protection can spread, and that benefits our entire community.”

The FLUMIST schedule runs from Nov. 9th to Nov. 19th.  Vaccinations will begin on Nov. 9, in the north end of the county with Northview High School, Bratt Elementary School, Ernest Ward Middle School, Molino Park Elementary School and Jim Allen Elementary School.  Also, set for Nov. 9 will be Blue Angels Elementary and Navy Point Elementary Schools.  Their permission forms should start coming home this week with a return deadline around a week before the vaccination date.

All of the school’s scheduled dates can be found on line at http://escambiaschools.net/health_services.

Schools will arrange a call out and permission slips will go home three weeks before the school’s date and need to be returned quickly, preferably a week prior to the vaccine date. The school needs to know how many children to plan for.  There may be extra doses at the school, but those will be limited, so it is best to return the permission form by the deadline set by your child’s school.

The schedule and the permission form can be found on the ECSD Health Services’ web page at: http://escambiaschools.net/health_services.
